No single control stops ransomware. A layered set of practical measures can significantly reduce the likelihood and impact of an attack.

Ransomware remains one of the most disruptive threats to organizations of every size. While no measure can guarantee protection, layered controls make attacks harder and recovery faster.

Foundational measures

  • Enable multi-factor authentication, especially for email and remote access
  • Keep operating systems and applications patched
  • Deploy and maintain endpoint protection on all devices
  • Limit administrative privileges to those who need them
  • Segment networks so an infection cannot spread freely

Backups you can rely on

Keep backups separated from the main network, protect them from deletion, and — most importantly — test restoring them regularly. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a plan.

Prepare to respond

An incident response plan that names decision-makers, contacts and first steps can save valuable time when it matters most.
